How to design your own movie theatre

Designing a room for your movie projector is stressful work. You can either hire a professional sound and light person to solve all your set up problem, or you can do it yourself. Of course it would be expensive to hire the professional. But it can be done. You can do it yourself if you do a little research and sweat a little.

The first thing to do is to determine where you want to place your movie projector, which will then dictate your sitting area for the viewers. Find out what the movie projector can or cannot do with the distance to the screen in order to get the best possible image. The room will determine the limitations of your movie theater design. If you have a big room, you can place more seats and even place special designer’s movie theater seats with arm rests. You can also have a bigger screen naturally with a bigger room. So smaller room means smaller screen size and lesser sitting capacity. Common sense actually.

The movie theater room plan should identify where each component of the movie theater system would be placed. All the equipment can be placed against the main wall, especially the main speakers and your other surround sound speakers to be hanging from the corner. Your wiring must be planned well ahead and if you want to hide those thick wires, get it measured and find out the best possible way to conceal them. It will be harder to reverse the process once you have knocked and plaster those holes. There will be plenty of sockets required, so make sure there are enough power supply points for the sound and movie projector system. Unless you intend to use the fire station services, do not overload on one single power point.

If you are using the living room as a movie theater, you have to consider the lighting from your windows. Reduce glare as much as possible and your movie projector will have an easier job in reproducing colors and contrast. If you use a special dedicated room for your home theatre system, then the results would be the best. Your movie screen will be the only source of light within the four walls.  There will very little leakage of your special sound effects from all your surround sound system also if you have walls to bounce off the sound. Consider insulation and sound proofing the room so that you can turn on the volume full blast without disturbing your neighbors. But make sure you have air-conditioning in that room.
