The first thing to do is to determine where you want to place your movie projector, which will then dictate your sitting area for the viewers. Find out what the movie projector can or cannot do with the distance to the screen in order to get the best possible image. The room will determine the limitations of your movie theater design. If you have a big room, you can place more seats and even place special designer’s movie theater seats with arm rests. You can also have a bigger screen naturally with a bigger room. So smaller room means smaller screen size and lesser sitting capacity. Common sense actually.

If you are using the living room as a movie theater, you have to consider the lighting from your windows. Reduce glare as much as possible and your movie projector will have an easier job in reproducing colors and contrast. If you use a special dedicated room for your home theatre system, then the results would be the best. Your movie screen will be the only source of light within the four walls. There will very little leakage of your special sound effects from all your surround sound system also if you have walls to bounce off the sound. Consider insulation and sound proofing the room so that you can turn on the volume full blast without disturbing your neighbors. But make sure you have air-conditioning in that room.
